But some bow, they never seemed to hit the mark. Amateur radio? A long wire kit, a discone, a ten-meter rig. Computers? They tried.but really, they were almost too soon in this market. I have been watching the demise of Radio Shack over many years now. Well, I pulled and re-soldered the rest, and my little radio worked! I was so thrilled! I learned lot not merely from this kit, and many kits to come, but from this kind and patient adult who took the time with me as a kid. Then, he sent me one my way and told me to stop back in if that didn't work, as I may have damaged them and they might need replaced.

He had me pull a second one, and place that one correctly right there in the store. He pulled one previously to my visit, and placed that one correctly. I got the diodes and the electrolytics in correctly, but the three connections that transistors needed is what I got wrong. Inviting me in on a Friday after the store closed, he showed me the problem.I had installed all of the transistors backwards! I had supposed that the schematic was rote, and didn't take into consideration that of course the circuit board was placed upside down for the soldering after populating the board one component at a time.

He said he would check it out, and call me. I tried to trace the problem down, with the Radio Shack "Micronta" Signal Tracer, to no avail. Now finished with the soldering via an "Archer" soldering pencil and slightly burned fingertips, I snapped the cover together, installed the battery, and turned my prized beauty together, and turned it on.
RADIO SHACK GOING OUT OF BUSINESS MADISON HEIGHTS PORTABLE
I had eyed the 9-volt portable transistor radio kit.and I HAD to get one! It was assembled over several school nights and a weekend, during a time when kids could actually endure a bit of delayed gratification. I begin, of course, with mine:īack in the 70's, when I was in Grade School, I would ride my bike to our local Shack, located in downtown Sandusky, Ohio, when we actually had a functioning downtown. So I started this post in hopes that others would add their respective reflections and memories of the stores. No doubt, there are other posts here on the demise as it continues to play out. Well, I am sure you all heard a few days ago about Radio Shack filing for bankruptcy.
